A Flash of Green

The hummingbirds in my garden never stayed long, but they always made me stop. They’d dart from flower to flower, then hover just long enough for me to catch a flash of green before they were off again. That brief pause is what I wanted to paint.

I set the bird’s bright greens against a coral-pink background and let the edges of its wings dissolve into loose strokes of color. The thicker marks around the body and tail give your eye something to settle on while the rest of the painting keeps moving. What enchanted me in the garden was that a creature so small could make everything around it feel still for a second. I wanted the painting to do the same.
